Deadvlei is a white clay pan with several petrified camelthorn trees surrounded by some of the tallest dunes in the world. The trees are thought to have died 600-700 years ago when water disappeared from the region. The trees are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Deadvlei is surrounded by the apricot-colored dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia. Deadvlei means dead marsh, Sossusvlei means dead end marsh & Kulala means to sleep well. The Namib aka the living desert is one of the oldest deserts on Earth. The Namib-Naukluft National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
